Part 3 · Creating the Schedule

Question 3

Which of the following is the preferred way to schedule the start date of a task?

  1. Enter the required date in the start field of the task.
  2. Create a task dependency from a suitable task then apply a lead or lag time to the link to place the task on the required date.
  3. Apply a "Must Start On" constraint to the task.
  4. Create task dependencies from the tasks predecessors (the tasks that must be performed immediately prior to the task).

Answer: CorrectIncorrect

The manual entry of a task start date is the technique of the novice project user.  This technique ignores the fact that tasks are dependent upon each other, it can cause many headaches when the project has to be rescheduled in any way.
Task links should be used to schedule tasks, but lead and lag times should only be used in their appropriate places.  They should be used to model over lapping tasks and waiting periods.
A "Must Start On" constraint locks a task so it must begin on that day in the schedule.  The nature of a project means a task's planned start date will often change as the schedule is developed.  It is far better to schedule tasks using task dependencies and use the default constraint - "As Soon As Possible".
Whenever possible tasks should be scheduled with dependencies.
