This is how Project behaved prior to Project 98.  A change of settings will make it behave in this way again.  But, by default, the adding of an extra resource reduces the duration of a task rather than increasing the work.

Part 5

You can assign as many different resources to a task as required.  But an understanding of the effect of adding resources is necessary before you attempt to do this.
