Save As Web Page
The Save as web page command (Save as HTML in Project 98) appears on the File menu. In my experience this is a little known feature that many people could use to improve the management of their projects. The Web Page Tutorial teaches you how to make the most of this very useful feature.
Project 98 introduced functionality that enabled the user to save their project plan as web page. There are several reasons for wanting to do this, here are some of them:
- It produces an electronic document that can be e-mailed or placed on a web site.
- It is in HTML format and is viewed by a web browser, MS Project is not required to view the document.
- The document is not the plan, and this means the person viewing it cannot make changes to the plan in a way they could if they were sent the mpp file. In affect it is read-only.
- The web page created is a report; data is mapped from the mpp file to html. You control and limit the information, it does not contain all project data, just the data you need people to see.
Whatever the advantages of this feature it does seem to be an under used one. The reason for its under use probably has a lot to do with the quality of the the web page that Project produces . When I started to demonstrate this feature in 1997 people were very impressed with the web page that was produced. But expectations have moved on and people now expect more than a static web page with a very clunky layout. The Project development team have not updated the templates used in the creation of a web page since they were first released in 1997, and this means web pages created from Project are now looking dated.
To rectify this problem and to encourage you to use this useful feature I have created some new templates to replace those provided with Project. These templates have been carefully designed to be direct replacements for those supplied with Project 98, Project 2000, Project 2002 and Project 2003.
